pay campaign 2002
To: ALL MEMBERS SOUTHERN REGION

From: DEAN MILLS

MEMBERS UPDATE: 4th NOVEMBER 2002

The Executive Council today agreed to suspend the 8 day strike due to start on the 6th November 2002, to allow further talks on our fair pay adjustment to take place.

We have informed the employers that should there be no substantial offer made by the 13th November 2002 then we will be forced into taking strike action form 18:00 on the 13th November. This gives the employers another 9 additional days to state how they will implement our pay adjustment and how the new formula will function.

We have been extremely patient during this campaign. We have suspended the action three times whilst having an 87.6% mandate to strike.

There is however a limit to how flexible, reasonable and patient we can be. The action of suspending the 8 day strike due to start on Wednesday demonstrates yet again that despite being accused by some as ‘militant’ we have shown restraint.

None of us wishes to take action of this sort but we will on the evening of the 13th November if the prevaricating by the employers continues, and progress which has started is not undertaken seriously with the employers focused on producing a substantial start to our pay adjustment and new formula for all sections of the fire service.

Our Regional Meeting yesterday will be followed up by further regional meetings within the coming week.

Talks in London continue tomorrow. I trust they will be productive, fair, and most importantly acceptable to all our members.
