The computer system failure which grounded
aircraft across the UK could, if replicated in the fire service,
lead to wholly avoidable deaths.
Dean Mills FBU Executive Council member for southern England said
“We have seen today the dangers of having a single control room
for mobilising and controlling aircraft. If the Government push
ahead with its untested, uncosted, and unreliable plans for the
fire service we will see fire service control rooms merged and lives
put at risk”
Mr Everitt the chief executive of national air traffic services
apologised to passengers and said Nats was working with airlines
to minimise disruption. He stated "We will now investigate
why there was this problem - clearly it was not an anticipated problem”
Mr Mills said “Here we have a multi million pound system which we
are told has the latest most expensive technology and yet it keeps
failing. When will this Government wake up to the fact that lives
will be at great risk if they force local tax payers to stump up
the money for their planned fire service control mergers?”
Nick Raynsford the Local Government Minister has consistently said
that modern technology was reliable. Mr Mills said today “Nick Raynsford
and the Government say technology can be used to replace staff and
it is reliable. Clearly Nick Raynsford and the Government are wrong
and the responsibility for people dying due to delays in mobilising
the fire service will rest with them”
